9 Ideas for Advancing Your Career at the Holiday Office Party

9 Ideas for Advancing Your Career at the Holiday Office PartyWith Christmas around the corner, holiday parties at the office are in full swing. Ive put together a few tips to help you network and grow your career during the office Christmas cocktailparty season.Improve Your VisibilityAttend as many pertinent social events and geschftlicher umgang gatherings as youd like. Whether its your office Christmas party or a get-together of professionals at a colleagues home, make every effort to be there. Career experts recommend you attend such social events, even for a short time, because your absence may be noticed, and your career or job search benefit greatly from the opportunity to network.By showing up on time, being kind, and visiting with others, you are demonstrating characteristics that may get you noticed by supervisors and potential employers who will think of you when a new opportunity becomes available. This is also a way to grow your list of contacts through the people you alr eady know. Holiday events for charitable, not-for-profit, or community groups can be great networking opportunities.Give a Little, Get a LotIn your career, as in other areas of life, putting others before yourself actually proves more productive for your professional growth than going into the party trying to figure out what you can get out of it. It may sound counter-intuitive, but instead of going to the office party this holiday season with thoughts of what you can get, I encourage my clients to think about what they can give. If you go with the mindset of talking with your colleagues and genuinely thinking about how you can help them in their careers, not only will the kindness be remembered, it will be returned. While I realize not everyone is willing to take this approach, it can be quite beneficial in the long run. Putting others first by supporting them in the challenges they are currently facing in their careers builds strong relationships that will support you when you need it. A small bchse of sincerity and thoughtfulness can go a long way.Network in EarnestThe holidays offer you an annual chance to flaunt your amazing social skills, which are especially important if your position requires working with other peoplesorry introverts, but the networking for introverts is a topic best left for another article. Engage with key players you dont usually get face time with such as colleagues in other departments. Visit for a few moments with a variety of peopleand be genuine with praise and gratitude. Smile while making eye contact, shake hands, and wish them well this holiday season. Always be sure to take plenty of business cards along to offer new contacts and ask for theirs in exchange.Diversify Your ContactsSeasonal parties and gatherings offer a terrific opportunity to network, so get in there and melange and mingle. When you attend events outside of your company or industry, this allows you to diversify your contacts. This will allow you to share idea s and exchange valuable information with other professionals, which often leads to career growth.Prepare in AdvanceBefore you attend an event, prepare a short (no more than 30 seconds) elevator speech about who you are. This should be concise, yet powerful, so people can get to know you quickly. Include your name, business, and where you work. You can also discuss what you specialize in, but be sure to avoid bragging. Remember to ask others to share information about themselves as well, and be a good, attentive listener. Give positive feedback by making eye contact as they talk, and ask short follow-up questions to show you were listening.Grow Your Online NetworkMany of us have time off during the holidays, so why not make the most of it? Use this time to beef up your presence online. Use LinkedIn to request connections with people you have met at holiday gatherings, friend colleagues on your professional facebook inc page, and follow important connections on Twitter. You may learn about career opportunities or open positions through these media and may be contacted about a job this way, as many of my clients have.Build a Positive ImageBy being upbeat and friendly at events as well as in the workplace, you can create a positive image of yourself as a professional among your colleagues and connections. Such optimism attracts others and encourages people to reach out to you for connections or with career opportunities.Be a Gracious GuestBefore leaving, be sure to thank the party planner who put things together. Party planning can be daunting, and gratitude is always appreciated. If the party was held at someones private residence, be sure to compliment the host and/or hostess for a splendid party, and thank them for the lovely evening. Follow UpBe sure to follow up with new contacts with a telephone call, email, or through social media expressing how nice it was to make their acquaintance. This will solidify your image with them as someone who is professional an d courteous, which can lead to career growth and new prospects. You can even send a thank-you card to the host or hostess for the wonderful event, and mention new contacts you made by name. This may spark your name coming up in conversation the next time they speak with the people you have just met, keeping you fresh in their minds.

And working moms with particularly demanding arbeitszimmer hours may feel like its pretty much impossible to spend enough time with their families. Thats whyOnDeckis such a great place to work. While the fintech industry is largely known for requiring long hours at the office, OnDecks leading the way in promoting a family-friendly culture that emphasizes flexibility and work-life balance.OnDeck Is Hiring Browse Opportunities. This may sound too good to be true, but we know that its notlage because we spoke to some of the working mamas who are employed tzu siche. Victoria Au, a senior technical lead on the team that owns all of the credit decisioning systems at OnDeck, filled us in on her path at the company, where she welches working when she became a mom. She started at OnDeck as a senior software engineer in 2014 and worked with her manager to build the companys Partner API from the ground-up. She was then promoted to be a technical lead of a team responsible for implementing all feature changes across all systems outside the United States before she was promoted to her current role.Victoria Au, Global Products Tech Leadat OnDeckNeedless to say, her job is no doubt challenging and her track record shows shes deeply committed to her career. Still, as a mom, she feels super well-supported at OnDeck.OnDeck is very supportive when I have to take care of my child and understands that unexpected events such as illnesses pop up, she explains. The good thing is that OnDeck focuses on results and not face-time. When Im unable to work several hours during the workday, Im able to complete target items on my own time, usually when my family is asleep. While Au has now spent some time navigating workingmom life, she knew early on in her journey as a parent that OnDeck would offer her what she needed. She was fortunate e nough to be able to take maternity leave right as the company increased it to 4 months. For me, she says, it was easier to manage if I took it all at once. Other parents have the opportunity to take it at separate intervals. I worked out a transition plan with my manager prior to my leave by listing out all of the different tasks that would need to be delegated, so I was not worried about my responsibilities and was able to focus on my family 100 percent.Chani Kohn, OnDecksSr. Manager, People Talent Development, agrees that the companys values are pretty on-point. At OnDeck, I have worked hard on defining my own balance, and what has made it easier to do that is that it is not just ok, but encouraged, she explains. While working on my own balance, OnDeck has helped me see that I can still have a successful career while doing so. It can be a potentially uncomfortable topic to bring up to discuss, and OnDeck has done a great job with encouraging managers and team members to have thes e conversations.Chani Kohn, OnDecksSr. Manager, People Talent DevelopmentAnd the best part, perhaps, is that OnDeck is continuously seeking feedback from team members to make their policies evenbetter. After returning from maternity leave, Au was invited to a feedback panel organized by the companys People Operations team and she offered her insight on how to make the leave process easier. OnDeck listened and soon after, made changes to the policy so they were able to accommodate more people, she says. Some of the changes include providing resources to support employees before and after leave and removing the primary vs secondary caregiver distinction.Kohn adds that OnDecks commitment to facilitating openness and candid conversations has added tremendous value to her work experience. Shes been working at the company for nearly three years and is already in her third role there. She says she got to where she is now by building strongrelationships, being open to and implementing feed back, and embracing opportunities that pushed her to learn and get comfortable with the uncomfortable. I have always had open and honest career conversations with my managers and mentors, she says. I share my interests, likes, dislikes, hopes etc. and discuss what is realistic, what is not and how what I want aligns with the needs of the business and my life.Of course, not every company is as wholeheartedly focused on employees growth and happiness. For those of you who are struggling to juggle your careers and family life, Kohn has some sound advice. Strive for excellence, not perfection this was once told to me by a mentor of mine and it was a game changer for me, says Kohn. She adds that its important to remember that balance is subjective. Define what balance means for you, and only you and dont worry about others. And, cut yourself some slack you are most likely the one adding the most pressure.Au has also shared some spot-on insight for working mamas particularly those who worry about feeling unfairly judged as less ambitious because of their choice to have kids. Before and after your leave, make it clear to your managers and their managers that you intend to come back ready to take on your previous role, she explains. I find this is less of a worry when expectations have been set on all sides. She adds that her career has been very satisfying since returning from leave nearly a year ago. The work I do is still very significant to the company.--Fairygodboss is proud to partner with OnDeck.Find a job there today
